Born in Zinaparo, Michoacán in 1945, Pimentel is maybe one of the most talented artists from this Mexican state, where the use of the mask may be traced as far back as the Pre-Hispanic period, but does not make it a historical-chauvinistic motif. On the contrary, is the reinterpretation of material from the unconscious – made conscious again – with the specific purpose of defining personalities and attitudes. The mask, a concrete depiction, defines; Christian iconography confers.
As native of a region where the mystery of the nature and the ancients rites last until present time, Pimentel recreates in his paintings those elements as integral part of the human life. In that way, the use of symbols, as the mask, helps the artist to reinterpretate the historic past and gives a new connotation to the human being attitudes and personality as center of the universe.
At the same time, the artist reflects in his work diverse elements of the animal world under two aspects: an abstract manifestation as Rodolfo Nieto and an objective position where the animal is what it is, without any other interpretation disguised, but both of them full of color given to his painting vitality and energy, like the beautiful and huge mural in the Restaurant Del Lago in Mexico City that shows his big talent.
Pimentel painted also important personages in Mexican folklore and mythology, such as the dancers which faces are almost covered for a mask adhered to them like second skin; each brush stroke a line of expression; each gesture shaping the entire surface.
Pimentel has had many exhibitions in Mexico as well in the United States and Europe. His work is part of the most important collections in the world. The World Bank chose one of his paintings to illustrate the book “Achievements and Challenges of Fiscal Decentralization, Lessons from Mexico” (May 2000).
Pimentel has a solid trajectory, is perhaps little known among experts in Mexican art, but he decided to dedicate himself to produce incessantly, forgetting to promote his work and image as an artist.
